EMPOWERING VOICES
January - September 2024
Bar Park Creative Project: A Safe Space for Youth Expression and Engagement.
Empowering Voices film was born out of Chispa’s Peer Research pilot conducted in 2023.
The film was designed to create an alternative creative output from the research which amplified the stories, aspirations, and voices of young people in a way that is accessible and useful to them and their communities. Developed through with our youth team, the project put young people at the heart of the creative process. From concept to production, participants recorded, filmed, and edited the film, ensuring youth representation remained central throughout.
The impact on the young people involved has been profound. By reclaiming stories and presenting narratives authentically, they’ve not only gained a deeper understanding of themselves but also forged strong connections with others who share similar experiences. This process has given them hope, a sense of belonging, and a collective power to inspire change within their communities.
"Empowering Voices" provides a fresh and insightful perspective of Gloucester, viewed through the lens of its youth. It showcases a narrative of the city that highlights resilience, optimism, and the potential for positive transformation. By sharing these stories, the project aims to inspire others to find their voices, reshape their narratives, and create lasting change in Gloucester and beyond.
The film demonstrates the transformative impact of participatory storytelling, giving young people the tools to reclaim their futures and influence their community. This approach has created a platform for youth empowerment.
The project has had significant support from the wider Gloucester community, with key partnerships from Gloucester Cathedral, Fairshares, JOLT, and The Guildhall. These collaborations reflect Chispa CIC's commitment to building long-term, reciprocal relationships with local organisations to promote more joined-up working across the city. One of the key goals is to bridge the gap between young people and the services and organisations that serve them, ensuring that youth voices are heard and engaged in all areas of city life.
